Sidama Bank listed today on the Ethiopian Securities Exchange Main Market under ticker SIDAX, becoming the seventh company and sixth bank on the board. A bell-ringing ceremony marked the listing. ESX CEO Yodit Kassa Waka called it a step from microfinance to commercial bank to public market. Existing shareholders can now trade on a regulated exchange.
Sidama Bank S.C. has joined the Ethiopian Securities Exchange Main Market, becoming the latest lender to list on Africa’s youngest stock exchange and the seventh company now quoted on the board.
The listing was marked by a bell-ringing ceremony on the ESX trading floor. Officials from the Ethiopian Capital Market Authority and the National Bank of Ethiopia attended, alongside Sidama Bank’s board and executive management, market participants, investors, and development partners.
The bank will trade under the symbol SIDAX.

ESX chief executive Yodit Kassa Waka said the listing is both a corporate milestone and a signal of confidence in the market.
“Sidama Bank’s journey from its roots in microfinance to becoming a commercial bank, and now joining the Ethiopian Securities Exchange, is a remarkable story of institutional evolution and growth,” she said. “Its decision to list on the Exchange represents not only an important milestone for the Bank and its shareholders, but also a meaningful expression of growing confidence in Ethiopia’s securities market. We welcome Sidama Bank to the Exchange and commend its commitment to transparency, accountability, and long-term value creation.”
Sidama Bank started as a rural women’s credit scheme in Sidama in 1994, later became a microfinance institution, and received a commercial banking license in 2022. It is based in Hawassa and is owned by about 2,000 shareholders, including the Sidama Regional State, cooperatives, associations, and private investors. The Ethiopian Capital Market Authority registered the bank’s existing shares in July 2026, clearing the way for today’s listing.
As a listed company, Sidama Bank will face tighter disclosure, governance, and shareholder-accountability rules. Existing shareholders will be able to trade on a regulated market, and new investors will have a public venue to buy into the bank.
The listing follows Sidama Bank’s completion of ECMA and ESX requirements. ESX congratulated the bank’s shareholders, board, management, and stakeholders and said it will continue to support the lender’s participation in the capital market.
What is already on the exchange
ESX began equity trading in January 2025 after Ethiopia went more than 50 years without an organized stock market. Before today, six companies were listed: Wegagen Bank (WGBX), Gadaa Bank (GDAB), Awash Bank (AWAB), Ethio Telecom (TELE), Abay Bank (ABAYB), and Bank of Abyssinia (BOAX). Five of those six are banks. Ethio Telecom remains the only non-financial issuer.
Sidama Bank’s debut keeps that pattern in place: Ethiopia’s young equity market is still dominated by lenders listing existing shares rather than raising large amounts of new capital through IPOs. Other banks and insurers including Dashen, ZamZam, Addis Bank, and Nib Insurance have already registered securities or received approval in principle and are in the pipeline.
ESX says each new listing widens the set of stocks available to investors and pushes the market closer to its longer-term goal of dozens of listed companies and a deeper pool of long-term capital for the private sector.
