Prosperity Party Proposes Two-Term Limit for Government Tenure

Ethiopia’s ruling Prosperity Party plans to introduce a proposal limiting the tenure of incumbent governments to a maximum of two terms. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) announced the move during his address to the House of Peoples’ Representatives on July 7, 2026, while presenting the government’s performance report for the 2025/26 fiscal year.

The Prime Minister stated that the proposal is intended to strengthen the nation's democratic system by establishing a culture of peaceful and lawful power transfers. By setting a fixed term limit, the party aims to mitigate political challenges often associated with prolonged stays in office and provide a stable foundation for future governance.

The Prosperity Party is scheduled to formally present this agenda during the National Dialogue Conference, which is set to begin on July 15, 2026. According to the Prime Minister, the proposal is designed to encourage political transitions based on established democratic practices rather than constitutional amendments aimed at extending leadership tenures.
