Tewolde Gebremariam, the former Group Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Air India. The announcement, made by the airline on Wednesday, follows a global search conducted by the company's board.
Tewolde succeeds Campbell Wilson. According to the airline, the appointment is intended to guide Air India through its next phase of transformation, focusing on fleet modernization, international network expansion, and operational reliability.
Tata Sons and Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran stated that the company has completed its initial stabilization and integration period and is now moving into a critical expansion phase. He noted that Tewolde’s track record in building one of the most profitable and efficient airline groups in the industry made him the preferred candidate for the role.

During his tenure at the helm of Ethiopian Airlines, which spanned more than a decade, the carrier saw significant growth. Air India reported that under Tewolde's leadership, the airline nearly tripled its fleet size and increased its revenue by more than four times, establishing itself as a major player in the African aviation market.
In a statement regarding his new position, Tewolde described the appointment as a profound honor and expressed his commitment to working with the board and employees to enhance service standards and long-term growth.
