Hardware manufacturer Canaan has suspended its Bitcoin mining activities in Ethiopia, leaving 35 percent of its global reported hashrate capacity inactive.
Canaan has paused its bitcoin-mining operations in Ethiopia, according to a footnote in the company's July 2026 operating update. The Ethiopian capacity nevertheless remained in the published hashrate figures.
The update, released on August 17 and covering July 31, assigned 4.96 exahashes per second to two Ethiopian projects. Its country table reported 14.24 EH/s globally. Dividing the Ethiopian figure by that total gives approximately 34.8 percent, explaining the roughly 35 percent share highlighted in coverage.
| Disclosure | July update |
|---|---|
| Ethiopian projects | 2 |
| Ethiopian computing capacity | 4.96 EH/s |
| Global country-table total | 14.24 EH/s |
| Ethiopian share of that total | About 34.8% — calculated |
| Bitcoin mined during July | 46 BTC |
Canaan's definitions allow machines that are temporarily offline to remain within some capacity measures. Its Ethiopia footnote explicitly says operations have paused while the hashrate remains part of installed capacity. The capacity figure therefore cannot be read as proof that those machines were producing bitcoin throughout July.

No firm restart date was supplied for the Ethiopian sites. A capacity figure therefore cannot be treated as a forecast of resumed production.
