The Benishangul Gumuz Regional State reported that it supplied 8,985 kilograms of gold to the National Bank of Ethiopia during the 2025/26 fiscal year. Officials from the regional Mineral Resources Development Bureau attributed the production increase to ongoing sector reforms and improved working conditions for producers.
Tujani Adem, head of the regional bureau, stated that these efforts have strengthened the region's contribution to national revenue. The government has focused on formalizing the supply chain while actively addressing illegal trade. According to the bureau, legal actions have been taken against more than 100 investors and traders found participating in unlawful mining and trading practices.
The growth in regional supply aligns with broader national efforts to expand mineral production. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed recently informed the House of People’s Representatives that the national mining sector generated 5.5 billion US dollars in revenue over the past year, underscoring the role of gold in the country's economic strategy.
