Awash Bank Named Ethiopia's Largest Domestic Private Taxpayer

Awash Bank S.C. has emerged as the leading domestic private taxpayer in Ethiopia, contributing 15.77 billion birr to the government during the 2025/26 fiscal year. This performance earned the bank the seventh position on the Ministry of Revenue's list of the nation's top ten taxpayers, a ranking otherwise dominated by state-owned enterprises and foreign-invested firms.

Data from the Ministry of Revenue’s Large Taxpayers Branch Office indicates that the top ten entities collectively contributed 254.44 billion birr, accounting for nearly half of the branch's total annual revenue of 522.67 billion birr. Awash Bank’s individual contribution represented approximately 3.02 percent of that total revenue.

The scale of Awash Bank's fiscal contribution highlights a significant concentration within the private sector. While the Large Taxpayers Branch Office oversees 532 private companies, this group collectively generated 104.60 billion birr in tax revenue. Awash Bank alone accounted for roughly 15 percent of that combined private sector contribution.
