Ethiopia Activates Full CSD & Ts’ega Investor Portal: A Structural Shift in the Ethiopian Capital Market begins

The National Bank of Ethiopia has officially launched the country’s first full Central Securities Depository (CSD) and the Ts’ega Investor Portal, effective 22 November 2025. This upgrade replaces the old paper share-certificate system and marks a major technical shift in how Ethiopia’s stock and share records are stored, transferred, and verified.

A Functional Overhaul of Ethiopia’s Core Market Infrastructure

The new CSD introduces capabilities Ethiopia has never had in its capital market, including:

  • Centralized electronic safekeeping of all shares
  • Automated and accurate transfer of ownership
  • Reliable clearing and settlement
  • Full post-trade lifecycle management
  • Lower operational and counterparty risks

These features finally align Ethiopia’s financial market operations with international standards and support the move toward market-based monetary policy tools.

Ts’ega: Direct Access to Your Shares — No More Certificate Dependence

Ts’ega gives investors real-time access to their stock and share holdings directly from the national depository.

  • No waiting for manual updates
  • No relying on intermediaries
  • No outdated share certificate confirmations

For the first time, investors can verify their ownership instantly and securely.

How Investors Can Access Their Shares on Ts’ega

The Ts’ega portal allows investors to view their stock and share holdings directly from Ethiopia’s Central Securities Depository (CSD).

  1. Visit the Portal:
    Go to csdtsega.nbe.gov.et.
  2. Register Your Account:
    • Provide your full name, email, and identification details to create a Ts’ega account.
  3. Link Your CSD Securities Account:
    • Contact a licensed broker or capital market service provider to link your CSD securities account.
    • Once linked, you can access your holdings directly.
  4. Log In and Access Your Holdings:
    • Use your credentials to log in.
    • View all shares you own, including private and public securities.
  5. Track Transactions and Corporate Actions:
    • Monitor dividends, stock splits, bonus shares, and other corporate actions.
    • All updates processed through the CSD appear automatically.

Modernizing Private Share Markets

The CSD now supports a full digital workflow for private securities, including:

  • Electronic dematerialization (ending physical certificates)
  • Centralized digital custody
  • Automated post-trade processes
  • Corporate actions management (dividends, splits, bonus shares, etc.)

This removes long-standing inefficiencies in how private shares were issued and transferred.

Aligned With NBE’s 2023–2026 Strategy

The new CSD supports key priorities in NBE’s roadmap:

  • Transition to market-based monetary operations
  • Strengthened data and analytics for policy decisions
  • Increased digitization of financial services
  • Institutional modernization across systems and processes

Why This Matters for Investors Right Now

This upgrade reshapes how Ethiopia’s capital market functions by changing how:

  • Shares are issued and recorded
  • Investors verify stock ownership
  • Transfers and settlements are processed
  • The future ESX ecosystem will operate
  • Monetary policy interacts with the financial system

It lays the foundation for future IPOs, greater liquidity, and a modern trading environment.
